According to data from the Spanish Meteorological Agency, July this year was the hottest month on record in Spain. Spanish vineyards are facing greater challenges than in previous years, with both advantages and disadvantages of high temperatures. The advantage is that it can reduce energy costs and does not require too much pest and mold prevention treatment. If extreme weather persists and grape moisture is lost, the grapes will become very sweet, and the wine made from such grapes will have a relatively high alcohol content.
Although vineyards can withstand high temperatures during roasting, extreme heat can also cause water shortage in the grapevines, affecting their development. If the grapevines lose too many leaves due to high temperatures, the fruits will be directly exposed to sunlight and become dehydrated without obstruction, resulting in smaller fruits, less juice, and a corresponding decrease in yield.
To avoid this situation, the harvesting time in many production areas has been advanced by 2-3 weeks compared to previous years. But it is expected that the production will decrease by an average of 15% -20%, and some production areas may experience a decrease of up to 25%. To ensure the quality of grapes, not only do they need to be harvested early, but workers are also forced to harvest them at night when the weather is cool.
The harvesting time of Italian and German wineries is also generally earlier. The Italian Agricultural Association also stated that the scorching heat may reduce Italian wine production by 10% in 2022. Despite being hit by heat waves, wine farmers from various countries still have confidence in the quality of the 2022 vintage wine.
Due to the shortage of packaging and other raw materials caused by the epidemic, as well as high transportation costs, and the risk of delays caused by unstable delivery times, all of these will have an impact on the pricing of future wine products. Although the prices of Spanish wine have not been affected by inflation so far, it is entirely expected that there will be a slight increase in prices if production decreases this year.
Returning to China, the increase in various costs is obviously difficult to improve in the short term, so the price increase of wine cannot be avoided, and the rising part will inevitably need to be shared by importers and consumers. So, for ordinary consumers, it is very necessary to make a purchase plan for alcohol in advance.
